When Pembroke Country Club was purchased last year by Marshfield native and former NHL star Jeremy Roenick, director of golf operations Nora Berard and her staff had hoped that the course would return to its past glory as one of the best public courses on the South Shore.

But they also had severely damaged greens, decaying cart paths, and several other problems caused by years of neglect.

One year later, not all of Pembroke's problems have been solved, but Berard has more than hope that the 18-hole course is on its way back.

She has evidence.

"I'm much more excited now (then last year), because we have a foundation to build on," said Berard, who's in her second year at Pembroke. "Many of our hopes and dreams have been realized."

One of those realized hopes and dreams is the revitalization of the greens. The South Shore is blessed with a number of public courses with outstanding greens, but Pembroke wasn't one of them. Last year, according to Berard, at least six greens were in such bad shape that they were missing turf, most notably on the first and 10th holes.

But after aggressively over-seeding and fertilizing all the greens last fall, they've made a miraculous recovery.

"The greens are perfect right now," Berard said. "I'd put ours against anybody's."

The best piece of evidence that the golf experience at Pembroke has improved is that the Massachusetts Golf Association chose it to host a qualifier for the Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship on July 7. Only courses that provide a sufficient challenge and are in good shape are given that type of honor.

Although Berard is proud of Pembroke's greens, she knows its only one item on a long list of to-dos. One of the first improvements made last year was the purchasing of new sand and rakes for the bunkers. This year, some of the bunkers will be rebuilt. Perhaps the only negative aspect of the course that will remain untouched is the cart paths, but that's only because Pembroke plans to install a new irrigation system in the near future, which would require tearing up any cart paths.

"The big thing is, we're a work in progress," Berard said.

The Essex County Club hosted one of the first Curtis Cups, in 1938.

Brae Burn in Newton has also hosted a pair of Curtis Cups, in 1958 and 1970.
